Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black & Decker 18-Volt Pivoting-Nose Cordless Handheld VacuumCustomer Review: Powerful and beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
This vacuum is a beautiful piece of art in addition to the top-grade suction. The designer has put lots of thoughts into the design to make it easy to use and store. However the designer ignored 3 very important aspects:
1) Too heavy, 4 lbs, for a hand tool.
2) The handle is off the weight center.
3) The angle of the handle is wrong.
Because of these, my hand gets tired very soon. I returned it and got a Shark SV736 instead. The Shark is 1 lb lighter, more suction and w/ a motorized brush. It is also $20 cheaper, but this is not the selling point to me and this B&D is well worth the extra $20 for all the thoughts the designer put into it. This B&D is a very sophisticated upholstery while the Shark is a plain simple tool which I always prefer. See my SV736 review for details.
I still give this B&D 5 stars because it is that good. I just wish the next version will get these issues improved.
Customer Review: Suck it up !!! Summary: 5 Stars
This little sucker is simply superb. Suction power is better than my upright vacuum, reaches tight spots effortlessly, dirt chamber cleans up without any mess and takes such little storage space. I've tried it on kitchen and bathroom floor and also on those dirt-balls/fibres/hair stuck on the carpet. I'd bought this vacuum to clean our car interior and haven't tried it there yet but I'm sure it'll do a great cleaning.
The only questionable thing is the battery life. Not sure how long it'll last and once it dies, then what? Also, it makes a turbo-jet like sound! But then in my opinion, sound is directly proportionate to suction power!
Some reviewers have said that it's heavy. Well, I'm a petite female and I don't find it heavy. Even if it is, the weight is well distributed and does not feel heavy.
Despite being slightly pricey, it is overall a great product!
Customer Review: Me like. Summary: 5 Stars
I read a very compelling review of this vacuum in Popular Mechanics where it handily beat out the very costly Dyson unit. That impressed me so much, I had to get it. I am not dissapointed, it works great and has lots of power. I also really appreciate how simple it is to clean, it is so simple I tend to dump out the debris each time I use it. I noticed some people complained that it is noisy, how crude. Of course, to have great power you have to make some noise, I'll take the roar anytime, as long as it has the pickup capability, I need. This unit totally blows away the old crappy "dust busters" B&D originally came out with. The folks who want quiet should stick with those underpowered pieces of junk.
Amazon gave the best price, by far, and the free shipping is always a super plus for me, I always look for that. Keep up the great work, Amazon.
Customer Review: Great handvac! Summary: 4 Stars
Overall I'm very happy w/ this purchase. The handvac has great suction and has no problems picking up crumbs, hair, paperclips etc. The added pivoting nose makes it easier to work around objects or when bending down to get something on the floor.
The downside that I have is with the charger. The base itself is just a plastic shell that isn't very sturdy. If you have it on carpet it's just fine but watch out if you have it sitting on the floor as that base will move around on you.
The base does a fairly poor job at holding the attachments and I've had the attachments fall out too many times to count. So much so I just keep them in a seperate drawer somewhere and they never end up getting used.
If they could improve the base I'd be really happy w/ this product but it's still the best handvac I've owned.
Customer Review: Finally performance Summary: 5 Stars
I am hopeful that Black and Decker has finally produced a hand held vacuum that will last a reasonable time. This unit has very good suction and appears well built. It has an extendable nozzle for getting into tight places, and the filter assembly is easily removed without getting dirt everywhere! You can even see the dirt buildup thru the clear case section. The pivoting nozzle will be useful for getting to higher places than just the floor. The introduction of an 18 volt unit should prove to be the answer to a really powerful unit. The vacuum is heavier than what we are used to, but certainly not cumbersome. If weight is a penalty for performance, then so be it. I am hoping that Black and Decker will produce a unit with a Nickel Metal Hydride battery some day to extend the life of these vacuums. So far, we are happy with this one.
